Fred Thompson has said very times that he has not been planning to be President since high school like Hilary Clinton et al. So he doesn't have to play by the rules that are mainly driven by the media who are hungry for any tit bit of "news" to fill the news cycle. He should run his campaign the way he likes and should not be ran around by pundits who have nothing better to do except air their unsought for opinion.
If the Republicans primary voters are for him, no amount of punditry will sidetrack his march for the nomination and frankly the voters in Iowa and New Hampshire have been a spoilt lot for a very time. How can two small states be allowed to control the outcome of the presidential election and therefore the destiny of the rest of the 48 states??.
