A New Consensus?

Submitted by Stephen A. Fredericks, Aug 7, 2007 18:05

For years I have read your columns about the fears many of us share with you that the government is getting just a little too much power and making a few too many mistakes with it - especially when it comes to protecting and preserving domestic rights to privacy, freedom of the press and free speech. I am not alone with my concerns that Bush and his colleagues will abuse this new power - seized during this wartime era - by turning it on American citizens, in error or with intention. They have done so with other recently awarded powers - despite promises and pledges to the contrary - why should any of us believe this time will be different? Your paper carried side-by-side columns monday clearly pointing to contradictions in practice versus policy regarding the expanded survellance powers. You should be reading your own paper - it is very good.
