Awaiting the Food Tsar

Andrew Wolf is sorely misguided on the cruel practice of foie gras. The ducks do not gleefully go to their "feeders" to be fed. Instead they are violently made to suffer through the forced insertion of a metal pipe down their throats and are force-fed enormous quantities of food multiple times a day. If this gorging on food was a natural condition, then why don't the ducks do it when left on their own? This is a foul (no pun intended) practice. The livers of these birds are made to swell up to ten times their normal size. The birds have difficulty standing, walking and even breathing, and many die during the grueling force-feeding process. I dare anyone to watch a video of this "gavage" procedure (isn't it so typical to give a horrific practice an innocent sounding name - it masks the reality) and not be horrified by what they see. We who advocate for the ban of foie gras have no interest in being the food police. We do, however, have an interest in ending cruelty and suffering be it a two-legged being, a four-legged one or a webbed one. Suffering is suffering. Cruelty is cruelty. Period. Over a dozen nations, the State of California and the City of Chicago have outlawed this egregiously cruel practice. A campaign to end this torturous practice is under way in New York City. For more information about the cruelty involved in foie gras, visit The New York City Say No to Foie Gras Campaign. www.nofoiegras.org/BanFGinNYC.htm.
