Mean, autocratic, and nasty doesn't describe the Democrats

It describes the Republicans who for the past 12 years have grown increasingly autocratic, exclusionary, and vituperative. They've been running things in Congress for 12 years and the whole enchilada for the past 6. It's telling that Lincoln Chaffee has related how, during his first visit to Bush in the White House in 2000, Karl Rove told him that the Republicans were going to play hardball with the Democrats. There has been almost no bipartisanship shown by the Repubs since then. Attempts by Dems to get legislation to the floor have been blocked in committee, there have been personal attacks on the patriotism of Dems who question the war, all attempts to bring accountability to the contractor process, fiscal reasonableness to government spending, and to curb corruption have been obstructed. They've spent 6 years biting, snarking, and barking and the public is sick of it.

As for Webb's writings, try reading them sometime. Read some of the articles he's written over the years, or his speeches. Here's one of my favorite quotes, advice to our leaders, and it gives a hint of the man:

"You hold our soldiers' lives in sacred trust. When a citizen has sworn to obey you, and follow your judgment, and walk onto a battlefield to defend the interests you define as worthy of his blood, do not abuse that awesome power through careless policy, unclear objectives, or inflexible leadership."
