Cold war era was basically the conflict of ideologies between USA and Soviet Union. During the cold war years, communist ideology was trying to spread its influence to poor countries and actually succeeded in doing so in countries like Vietnam, Kampuchea and Laos.Had it not been the US intervention, countries like Thailand and Malaysia probably would come under the influence of communism.
Today, the most dangerous "ideology" comes from fundamentalist Islam. It is the religious fervour that appeals to fanatics that makes the religion more dangerous. The exploits of the religous clerics who have the authority to pass "judgement" on whom they consider "enemies" make the religion no different from communism. You see it for yourself the situations in the majority muslims countries today.
