Ban on Window Peeping Is Sought

Submitted by Claude Bogardus, Aug 22, 2007 13:51

The law, as presently drafted, invites an invidious enforcement conforming to the Constable's prejudices, cultured and uncouth. For example, viewing a devout Moslem Arab woman's cascading hair might result in an urgent call to the precinct, while another, Wellesley educated, young woman clad in her accepted exercise costume would prefer to ignore any eyes straying in her direction. She has been accustomed to dealing with more important matters. The poor voyeurs could find themselves quivering with perplexity. On the other hand, what to do about those aesthetically constructed human beings, lavishly spread about the Five Burroughs, who are governed by the slogan: "If you've got it, flaunt it!? Should they be deprived of their potential audience? A wealthy society must deal justly with such profound questions, or future historians will chide their priests and magistrates to rags.
