The absurdity is that anyone would contend that we were trying to "impose our political system and will on a people that in the majority did not want, or at least could not militarilly enable it." We were trying to prevent a dispicable system (communism) from being imposed on a people that weren't subjected to it at that time. We failed. Fortunately, we were more successful on the Korean Peninsula....and look what happened. One need not look very hard to see the different situations among North and South Korea.
An appalling lack of economic understanding is also on display here. Vietnam is a fledgling economy that is, by and large, still quite poor. Their capacity to grow at 10% is due to their abysmal starting point. A mature, fully developed economy like the U. S. can't possibly grow at 10% on a sustained basis....a 3% rate is considered "at trend"; we have been at or near that since the mid-1980s.
On another note, I find it interesting that anyone would use a supposed lack of European interference in our Civil War as an example of anything. In fact, Europe DID "interfere" in our conflict.....they sent multitudes of military advisors and observers to work with the Confederacy in the hope that the United States would no longer be united. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful. Anyone interested in becoming educated on the subject should read the historical novel "Killer Angels" that extensively covers the run-up to and execution of the battle of Gettysburg.
