The palmetto State has been a tougher place for Mitt to gain traction, but his trend line reflected by all polling is still moving up. McCain will continue to trend down. After he becomes a candidate and has to campaign, Fred will lose steam. Mitt does not have to win South Carolina to be set up for Florida - though that is still possible . A respectable showing in South Carolina is all he needs to keep the momentum alive. Since South Carolina is a winner take all primary, a win could give Mitt an almost unsurmountable lead, but he is still in good shape without that win. As the South Carolina voters become more engaged , get to know Mitt and actually compare Mitt to the alternatives, he will continue to gain. The question is whether Rudy or Mitt comes in first in South Carolina.
