Typical Paul Gardner. I agree with most of his criticisms about the modern game but his overstatement becomes tiresome. Goalkeeping is pretty low on the list of threats to the Beautiful Game. The only point above he makes sense with is that about goalkeepers booting it from box to box. But that's more to do with the culture of English football which Gardner so loathes than with the position of goalkeeper. You don't see keepers in South America, whose football Gardner drools over (and I prefer myself), doing that sort of thing.
