The iPhone and the Technology Thieves

I take exception to the part: "Instead, it chose an exclusive contract with AT&T, self-evidently because it was in Apple's financial interest to do so. A different distribution plan would have been less profitable for Apple, or else Apple would have chosen it." You're assuming that Apple has immediate financial interests in mind. Could it be that AT&T may have offered a less profitable option, but far more promises on the quality of the service and the ability to resolve issues quickly? If Apple had chosen to sell directly to customers and do away with the exclusive contracts all together, the experiences of iPhone users would vary widely. Apple is the type of company that doesn't like to just design a product and hope it works as well as they wanted it to once it is out in the wild. They want the control to make sure their users are happy. That develops a solid (sometimes zealous) user base that is a strong business model for a long term strategy. As far as the merits of hacking the iPhone are concerned, I agree. And it doesn't stop with the iPhone. Hackers are being hailed as heros in a lot of media articles lately. It seems as long as regular people aren't the target (as in ID theft), people remove themselves from the situation as if it doesn't affect them and look at it as an accomplishment of individuals.
