I've often marveled at the Left's insistence on "owning" a war they supposedly hated, but that's because I committed the oft-repeated sin of thinking liberals are a well-intentioned-but-naive lot. I've since learned better, as should anyone who detests their agenda but can't understand from whence it came.
Thus their obsession with the Vietnam canard, to which they cling like driftwood for fear of being so exposed. It's been the Left's war for 40 years precisely because a truthful accounting of its lessons unmasks them as the subversive lovers of tyranny they've always been, from the NY Times' whitewash of Stalinist starvation to its romantic infatuation with Fidel Castro and Daniel Ortega to the Michael Moore "Minutemen" assessment of today's Islamofascist thugs in Iraq.
As such, we need to understand that the Left is not delerious in a conventional sense when insisting our betrayal of Vietnam had "no negative consequences." Because to them, the dilution and eventual extinction of American power is a very positive (and desirable) outcome -- in Southeast Asia four decades ago, Baghdad today and every other theater of operation in between.
How ironic that the Left insists we need to "understand the true motives" of our enemies while intentionally concealing their own. And how futile our efforts to stop them will be until we see them for who and what they really are.
