Perhaps there is not such a great gult between the young sanctimonious teetotaler and the elder greybeard bard. They both had their finger on the pulse of the time, and both dealt in "shocking" fantasies and redemption by self-assertion. Walt had all the afflatus he needed at home in his own hormones.
