I had to take a moment this morning to respond to Alicia Colon's article in today's Sun. Colon suggests that Wal-Mart, in recognizing the diversity of it's workforce and providing benefits to same-sex partners, was somehow committing itself to giving preferential treatment to Gay and Lesbian companies and products.
I am so tired of the argument that by simply recognizing that the partners and families of Gays and Lesbians do exist they are somehow being given preferential treatment. Is the straight majority that nervous that they are losing their tightly held monopoly? Get over it Alicia.
Is it possible, just possible that Wal-Mart saw a slight downturn in sales because that is what has been happening across the marketplace as a whole? COuld it be that Wal-Mart, as so many experts suggest is beginning to feel the effects of market saturation and stronger competition? Colon doesn't sight any other statistics as she so proudly points out that the AFA boycott of Wal-Mart was so successful. She must be so proud - hate and intolerance won out in her mind.
Equal rights? Who needs them right Alicia? When it costs too much money to make things more accessible for the blind, well then, they simply don't deserve equal treatment.
