We certainly should never forget these brave fighters who risked their lives to save the survivors of the Holocaust. My father (Benjamin Halpern) was one of them. He had been a chief engineer in the US Navy and was recruited to join the Alyah Bet and later the fledging Israel Navy. His sacrifice as well as his fellow fighters should always be remembered but so should the sacrifice of their familys. Like my mother (Esther Halpern) they had to go on with their lives without their loved ones for long periods of time. My father told me stories of the fight for Israel. He always had a special place in his heart for the young men who lost their lives while smuggeling items, into Palestine that would be needed for the new nation.
