My difficulty with this issue is based on the two ironic and converse foci of the issue in Iraq.
The inception, rationale, and pursuit of this war were ill conceived and foolhardy. The poor planning and faulty justification eroded American leadership and wagered American patriotism and lives on a foolish bet. We did not attack terrorism. We created a position whereby terrorists can easily attack us.
Nonetheless, I fear an Al Qaida or other reactionary Islamist regime in Iraq would punish the United States and Europe horribly. Such a regime would be even more horrible for the Islamic world which now has a very dangerous task of establishing itself as responsible and humane in the face of movements that want to make it the opposite.
Let's make no mistake. If American soldiers and diplomats can create something responsible and stable from Iraq, they have achieved the greatest American victory since World War II and the founding of the UN and NATO. They have even found victory over the incompetent and ignorant leaders who initiated this war.
