While Jane Jacobs did indeed champion small local businesses and diversity, I think it's important to note that, generally speaking, she was not in favor of anti-growth approaches or protectionism. Instead, she was in favor of pro-growth approaches like "competitive diversion," and increasing retailing opportunities (e.g., removing restrictive zoning, adding more streets and storefronts -- and thus more retailing opportunities -- into a city, etc.) rather than decreasing them.
