Who Can Afford a 60-HR Man Next Season?

Submitted by Jon, Sep 11, 2007 12:35

It's amazing to me how an article discussing ARod's future can completely fail to mention anything about the subsidy the Yankees are receiving from Texas. That alone will in all likelyhood allow them to offer ARod and extension/signing bonus which will top anything he can receive on the open market.

What type of contract do you think ARod would receive from the Red Sox as a free agent? Let's say $240M over 8 years, because you seem to be implying $30M per year (though my argument holds for any amount). All the Yankees have to do to match that, is give him a $159M/5 year extension. ARod will receive $240M over 8 years, the Yankees will pay $210M, and Texas will pay $30M.

So the Yankees would be paying nearly $4 Million LESS per season than Boston would. Do you really think that Cashman won't come within $4M of what the Red Sox would pay? That's ludicrous.

The only way ARod doesn't return to the Yankees is if he goes 0 for 25 in the ALCS against the Red Sox and gets booed off the field.
