While we "athiests" perhaps cannot pass university entrance exams of centuries past, we can maintain peace in most of the developed world, manage behavioral disorders that had made people pariah in times past, and cure diseases that were fatal only decades ago. We also negotiate disputes that created holocausts and wars scarcely a half century ago. Through disciplines such as chaos theory and emergence, we understand elements of life that had only recently been shrouded in superstition.
There is a great deal to be said for liberal democracy, and for the clear thought and hard work that goes into publishing The Sun and this article.
