Clinton Spars With Petraeus on Credibility

Submitted by Patrick E. Snyder, Sep 12, 2007 14:11

Given the degree to which every department in this administration has been politicized, including the military, as the dismissal of many generals who didn't toe the party line attests, Sen. Clinton is simply stating the obvious. To take Gen. Petreaus's testimony as if it were unspun gold does require a willing suspension of disbelief. When you add to the administration's broad lack of credibility the fact of the much bleaker and more credible data of other recent reports and polls, including those in Iraq itself, then willing suspension of disbelief must pass into utter gullibility in order for the Petreaus testimony to be swallowed whole. Finally, add to all this that Congress now seems to regard swearing in as an embarrassment rather than a necessary institutional tradition, and it's well nigh impossible to find any reason to accord Gen. Petraeus even a modicum of credibility.

It must be said, too, that the administration's utter lack of credibility cannot be laid at the door of either an adversarial press or a hostile Congress. This administration has faced neither. It's lack of credibility is due entirely to its own actions - its deceptions, manipulations, lies, evasions, and blanket secrecy, along with its well known antipathy to facts and theories not consonant with its own ideology. This is the most mendacious, least trustworthy administration in memory and has no one else to blame if General Petraeus's testimony is not taken as gospel truth.
