Stuyvesant High School's Status Burnished by New Book

Submitted by Betsy Combier, Sep 12, 2007 19:50

Two of my daughters attended Stuyvesant High School, 1999-2007, therefore I have a very good picture of how far Stuyvesant has fallen from it's original mission and promise to nurture the highest-level academic performers of the New York public school system into a holding pen for gifted and talented kids that are given too much freedom at too young of an age. There is a very serious drug problem at Stuy, and problem kids are expelled sometimes for the wrong reasons.

Teachers are demoralized and for the most part do not respect or trust Stanley Teitel, the Principal. The few excellent teachers are outnumbered by terrible teachers who have been given their positions because of Stanley's great interest in using the teaching staff as his political tool. Math AP Danny Jaye was the driving force behind the excellent math program at the school, and when he left, so did the AP for Chemistry and Physics, Dr. Olga Livanis, a brilliant scientist. Both have not been replaced with anyone near to their level of expertise.

The Co-Presidents of the Parents' Association for the past two years literally threw out chinese parents, and alienatd half of the school. These two women then told me, a parent who donates money through the PA because they say the PA is a 501 C 3, that there is no paperwork on the financial status of the PA incorporation as a 501 C 3, and no, I cannot see any receipts for the $400,000 raised every year. Joel Klein and his general Counsel Michael Best have told me that I will "never" see the financial records.

A concerned group of parents filed a complaint with the Attorney General's office on December 4, 2006 citing a missing $320,000+ in cash revenue from the Stuyvesant HS PA. The auditors for the PA told me on June 19, 2007 that they have been unable to audit the books of the PA for the past two years, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007, due to missing cash revenue.

Stanley Teitel, Senator Charles Schumer, Donovan Moore (husband of Time Warner Exec. Ann Moore) and several other well-known people are members of the Board of a separate 501 C 3, "Friends of Stuyvesant High School". I am one of many parents that are asking, "Where's the money, Stan and Joel?"
