I don't like the doctor analogy. With all of their education, I find them sorely lacking in knowledge/practice concerning healing and prevention. Most doctors simply prescribe, or advise in the most general terms. No--as a teacher, I do not wish to be compared to doctors. I don't prescribe--I support. I don't operate and consult--I assess, and review. On a daily basis, I see the same individuals, and foster relationships that address faceted maturity and advancement. Instead, I wish Randi had made the point that no teacher can claim sole responsibility for the progress of their students. Public school children are exposed to a variety of teachers/experiences, every year. How could anyone possibly pinpoint the catalyst that helped a student to advance? When test scores go up, was it the resource teacher, the principal, a volunteer, a fieldtrip guide or the primary instructor that was most effective? Who gets the bonus? Inarguably, the primary instructor is with the child most often. However, children are not only exposed to material, but they are also inspired, and encouraged, as a part of their success. In addition, it might have been the previous teacher that gave a child what they needed to advance the following year. Should I take credit for another's work? Public education is a progressive endeavor. I would never claim sole responsibility for any student's success--and I've known quite a few successes. I realize that my students come to me with a set of skills which I hope to advance, but have not solely supported. Next time Randi, remind people that we work in tandem. Thanks.
