A Showcase for Opera's ‘It' Girl

This dynamic of the visual aspects and "stage presence" crowding out vocal skill makes one wonder where the line will be. At what point will critics and audiences demand that singing ability still retain primacy over visual appearance? More physical acting and visually appealing singers IS a good thing; but how much is enough?

She couldn't hit the high Fs on the page. So are we going to sacrifice the actual music of the composers in compromise to get pretty, sexy singers?

I think this blog review http://balconybox.blogspot.com/2007/02/netrebko-phenomenon.html gives yet anotehr perspective on the problem.
