I would submit that there is no reason for a child of Spanish-speaking parents to avoid learning English. There is no reason for a child of English-speaking parents to avoid learning Spanish. By the time one is entering university or military service, conversational use of three languages would be appropriate.
The decision is not which language a majority may impose on others. It is how the majority can become intellectually and culturally nimble enough to coexist with others. That is a vital majority that can intelligently participate in international commerce and guide a foreign policy that impacts the world.
America must seek to lead the world by engaging and understanding it, not dominating it.
