Search Is On For the Next Pavarotti

Submitted by Donald W Honan, Sep 19, 2007 06:55

It would seem from the article that the writer not only knows little about the singers of whom he writes, but just as little about The Voice in general, and perhaps Opera as well. It would seem that all it takes to be published with an opinion these days is to have one. Case in point: Florez has a small voice that would never be able to perform enough different roles to qualify. And the writer's personal opinion of the quality of any given Donizetti opera(or anyone else's) should not be stated in such a way as to seem a proven fact. La fille has been growing in popularity whenever there is a cast that can do justice to this lovely little comedy. The WINNER will have to have enormous popular appeal, and, like Pavarotti, Lanza & Caruso in the past, have at least a decent level of musicianship. ...and the voice will have to be able to survive what the singer does to it along the way--Vargas being the only one intelligent enough not to push the voice out of shape for "popular effect". And that probably dooms him to second place!; just like Kraus, who is the only one of the whole bunch that I would consider properly categorized in the article.
