In Book, Teaching Fellows Dropout Points to Inadequate Preparation

Submitted by E.Blathe, Sep 19, 2007 09:49

As a Fellow entering my fifth year, I find it surprising and frustrating that Dan Brown seeks to paint us all with the same brush. From everything I have read (published by the NYCDoE and the UFT) the Fellows have retention that is as good as any other type of teacher in NYC. It's not fair to say that only 42% of the first cohort are still teaching without mentioning that's the same for all teachers in NYC, or any urban district, who started that year.

It's not good that half of my colleagues (Fellows or not) will leave the district after five years, but that has very little to do with preparation. In fact, Fellows are more likely to finish their first two years than any other teacher routes (probably because we're still getting our degrees).
