Ban on Trans Fat in Restaurants Is Approved by New York City

Submitted by Mark A. Hurt, MD, Dec 6, 2006 10:21

It is bad enough that government regulates virtually everything today. Now comes the regulation of trans fat in New York City restaurants in the form of a ban of them.

In a country (and a city) whose government is supposed to protect the rights of its individuals, the individuals should be able to determine whether they can serve trans fat or eat them (or both), not the government. The issue is really is not about the health effects of trans fat, it is about violation of the rights of individuals by an oppressive government.

It is so petty and so silly. There is not even an attempt to hide the virtually complete control of government of the food industry, all the while claiming that the restaurants are private; they are not. There is only the facade of privacy; those restaurants are now puppets of government whim.

What ever happened to the true meaning of individual rights?
