Obama Hopes Could Rest on Jena Case

Submitted by David, Sep 20, 2007 12:56

Being arrested for sitting at a lunch counter and firmly demonstrating equality in the segregated Sixties is far different than the Jena Six arrested for pummelling a kid - there's no protest, just a violent crime. What is Sharpton and Jackson demanding? That Obama take a stand and support a violent criminal action? What exactly is Sharpton and Jackson message about the violence? It's okay - eye for an eye. Clearly there was racial tension prior to the beating with the hanging of the nooses, but where was the "Point of Action" (to borrow phrase from Sharpton) from the Jena Six then? Why didn't the boys seek advice from parents, civic leaders, or write letters to Sharpton and Jackson and seek support? Obama owes nothing to the Jena Six for committing a crime. I support the boys right to a fair trial and getting to the bottom of the racist acitivity prior to the beating, but not at the risk of letting a criminal action slide.
