John McWhorter is mistaken that the sole reason people take Barack Obama seriously as a presidential candidate is his skin color. He's a charismatic Democrat who was president of the Harvard Law Review, was elected senator from one of the largest states at a relatively young age, speaks movingly about the need for the country to turn the page on decades of partisan division, and has an obvious capacity to inspire millions of people. He would be taken seriously regardless of his skin color.
