Why should anyone be shocked that Columbia University would give a forum and respectability to a purveryor of hate ? The president of Iran is not only a self-declared arch enemy of western liberalism but a rank anti-semite and would-be destroyer of the State of Israel.
No one denies the right of Columbia to invite whomever to their campus. The argument is about the morality of inviting such a figure of hate and violence. This is an argument about doing the right thing.
No doubt doing the "right thing" is a completely foreign concept to the learned men and women of this once august institution of higher learning. It has become so popular for so long to bash the United States and its values that this invitiation is the natural outcome of such a benighted policy.
Somewhere along the line the graybeards at Columbia lost the ability to tell the difference between constructive criticism of their country and its institutions and culture and just plain bashing and propaganda.
Columbia is entitled to invite whomever they wish to their private university campus. The rest of us are entitled to regard Columbia as a fallen angel that is in dire need of making amends.
If the spokesman for Columbia was serious in suggesting that he would invite Hitler then anything really goes. What's next ? Pedofile murderers describing the pleasure they take in abusing and killing little children ? Why not ?
Columbia has really opened the gates of hell with this invitation to the president of Iran.
