Columbia Dean Defends Ahmadinejad Invitation

Submitted by Sheri Clemons, Sep 24, 2007 07:41

Mr. Coatsworth presumes with extraordinary naiveté, that the President of Iran is actually open to considering ideas and opinions other than his own. People who choose to believe that they (and those of like minded beliefs), are soley capable of ridding the world of dangerous infidels, and are doing so at God's behest at that; ususally don't hold differing opinions or beliefs in high regard. The Iranian President and regime are not likely to change their mindset after listening to students and academics from the "decadent USA".

Conferring an aura of implied legitimacy upon such individuals by providing them with a forum at any reputable institution of higher learning is just unacceptable. Embolding those who have sworn to decimate freedom, democracy, and all basic human rights, does not enhance learning, or academic freedomes. It only serves to undermine everyone's humanity, and the hard won human rights that we enjoy in the United States.
