all of the democratic candidates have already made the choice between so-called free trade and what you call protectionism. so have an increasing number of economists and the vast majority of american people. just as the democratic left lost ground during the last thirty years by ignoring the reality of globalization, the democratic right is about to lose the argument that you shouldn't fix something when it isn't working well. and the republicans, all of them, are about to enjoy several decades on the outs because they focussed on their profit margins without at least a sidelong glance at the american people.
