I was at the concert of the Pittsburgh Symphony and I, too, resented the pretentious prep of the audience for the the intellectual and relevant piece that would follow.
Mr. Nordlinger correctly describes the music as "one of those bleak, end-ofthe-world pieces, with stuttering rhythm and tons of percussion. Someone, somewhere, is writing such a piece every day, maybe every hour. It is a signature of our age."
I was also disappointed by the thin tone of Mr. Joshua Bell's sound in playing the Brahms Violin Concerto. It was my first encounter with Bell the violinist.
