I normally would not defend Ahmendijad, but Bollinger was embarrassing.
First of all, he crudely insulted Ahmendijad by calling him uneducated. Say what you want, but Ahemdijad is both educated and intelligent. So Bollinger was left throwing empty insults.
Second, Ahemdijad did not deny the Holocaust. Bollinger had it wrong. I read transcripts of his interview in which he said he didn't know what parts of the Holocaust were fact and what parts were exaggerated. He was in favor of letting scholars debate aspects of it in a free forum rather than threaten prison time as happens in some European countries. He also said the Palestinians should not bear responsibilty for whatever Holocaust happened on European soil.
Third, Ahemdijad did not say Israel will be wiped off the map. Most scholars say that is a misrepresentation of what he said. He said Zionism will be discredited and will fail just as communism failed and it will cease to exist.
He also proposed to debate Bush in an open forum. No editing. No handlers. No filtering of sound bites. Just a live debate of issues. Bush declined.
The more Ahemdijad speaks the more reasonable he sounds. But Americans are too immature to have an honest and open discussion. The American elite and press need total control over what Americans can hear.
