Strike Threat Issued by Drivers Over Taxi GPS System Requirement

Submitted by James Smith, Sep 26, 2007 23:03

The taxi and limosine commission's reasons for requiring the GPS locaters seems flimsy. It does not seem that there is a connection between locating lost passenger belongings and GPS locaters in the taxi's. Certainly there could be a cheaper better faster way to find mis placed belongings. Besides, is there evidence this really works? So, those are the profit/losss and pragmatic questions in this decree from the TLC.

The deeper problem is the fundamental economic problem of the free market. If there is widespread cheating of customers, that is a problem for the TLC and courts to address in an efficient manner. If lost belongings are a matter of mistake, then a much simpler fix is possible. Have the drivers give a receipt of milage or date of drive to the rider with a cab number on it, or medallion number on it. Then the customer knows where they might have misplaced their goods and can fetch them again. The receipt does not have to be elaborate or sophisticated. Just a simple slip of paper would do.

The TLC is totally out of line with freedom and common sense. I don't know why and it doesn't matter. Stop the GPS madness.
