NYU Freshman's Suicide Raises Adjustment Issues

Submitted by Former NYU Student, Sep 30, 2007 01:00

I've been there. It's difficult. I don't know where to begin to express my sincere and utter shock at the situation. I was informed of this horrible event by my mother and father, who still receive e-mails from NYU regarding student life and University events. They received the mass e-mail issued by John Sexton (who is a wonderful man in so many regards).

There IS a problem with attending a large university, especially one in such a big city as New York City. The student MUST be prepared. As well, the student must be exceedingly well-adjusted. And unfortunately, there is no real test of this, except to get out there and try it. I've heard stories about the NYU suicides, as has every other NYU student. There have been rumors, jokes to laugh so you don't cry, and horror tales that would chill to the core.

But nothing, I believe, is more horrific than the actual thought that this has actually occurred. I transferred from NYU over a year ago, taking a Medical Leave of Absence. The University, due to its size, is truly unable to give the individual the psychological help and aid he or she may need. That isn't to imply, in any case, that NYU is cold or apathetic, or that they do not have help readily available. But the individual student MUST ask for it.

When a student is pulled so far into a pit of depression (or stress) it is easy to reason that "it isn't needed," or perhaps that "I just don't have the desire to get up and go." With all of the pressure of college... (being on your own, responsibly studying without any kind of parental supervision, learning to eat propery, making friends in a place where you probably have none) ...it would be remotely helpful to have someone there to say, "You seem depressed. Let's talk."

Let me clarify again. I am not, in any way, holding the University responsible for these acts, nor will I ever attempt to label them as liable. But what I am saying is this: NYU is NOT the school for everyone. It wasn't for me, and finally, I am able to finish out my college career well-adjusted. NYC is still an incredible city, and I would still like to make my livelihood there, but...there is a time and a place for that.

My thoughts go out to the family of this poor boy. I can only imagine their grief, but I hope that this will be an outlet for other students to be able to step forward and say, "I need help." It is out there...even if it means stepping away.
