Justice Thomas's Remarks May Impact Race in 2008

Submitted by Brad Thomas, Oct 1, 2007 12:16

Justice Thomas attributes the vicious character-assassination he suffered at his senate confirmation hearings to his being viewed as an uppity black who deigned to think for himself, one whom his attackers knew they couldn't control, and thus viewed as being a threat to their agenda. Thomas is right that he was viewed as a threat to his attackers' agenda, he is mistaken to think that the attack had anything to do with his race. Judge Bork was not ruthlessly attacked due to his race, nor even due to his faith (he was a professing atheist at the time of his senate confirmation hearings); Bork was subjected to withering character assassination due to his not being the "right" kind of judicial nominee. It is so prevalent for black people in this nation to conclude that whatever negative things they experience are due to racism; the truth is that race is infrequently at the heart of the matter.
