From ‘a Surly Kind of Slum' to a Desirable Locale

Maxey-Allison's comments show a certain ... point of view that's a little disturbing, and Vitullo-Martin repeats it without question.

Vitullo-Martin writes of the Columbia, "Opened in 1983, its importance lay in pushing the boundary northward for ordinary New Yorkers." She quotes Maxey-Allison as saying, "nobody went up there in the old days. ... buyers realized all the great space that was available."

I spent a large part of my childhood on the Upper West Side in the late 70s and early 80s, and there was definitely a boundary at around 96th Street. I remember crossing that boundary a few times, and there were people there! Obviously somebody went up there in the old days, and they seemed like pretty ordinary New Yorkers to me.

Ah yes, now that you mention it, a lot of the "extraordinary" New Yorkers who lived north of 96th Street were Black and Puerto Rican. Funny how those people don't seem to count for Maxey-Allison and Vitullo-Martin.
