This is a news article, not a review of a performance, and is most welcome. Benjamin Ivry writes with an elegant style, and supplies valuable historical and cultural information in every sentence. His enthusiasm for lieder, and his obvious infatuation with both Mitsuko Shirai and Helmut Höll led me to give a listen to their artistry and to spend an hour listening to Souzay sing Schubert and Ludwig sing Mahler. Above all, Ivry makes his reader wish she or he could whiz over to Stuttgart to hear the concluding days of the competition in progress there. Bravo to him.
