The House That Frick Built

Aside from two patches of grass, the Frick has nowhere to expand except down. To go up would visually ruin one of the most beautiful private homes left in Manhattan. But to go underground, and I should add, in a modest way, would probably save the day. For anyone who has attended the recent brilliant Adelaid Gealt/George Knox inspired Tiepolo exhibition of drawings from the New Testament one would agree that another room or two - more airy- would be appreciated. The idea of building underground has been proposed before. The fussy-family board sacked the previous director at this suggestion, but it is the answer. The low cieling'd exhibition space down-stairs is really just a conversion of an old 'helps hall' and is a bit suffocating, especially when the Frick's mini-block-buster shows (and kudos to them for having them) draw in a substantial number of attendees, the place gets uncomfortable. To dig down, under the front lawn with a high cieling'd room or two would be a wonderful addition and give the Frick the ability to handle somewhat larger exhibitions.
