The revelations about Stein's charmed life under the Nazis will come as no surprise to anyone who has read Robert McAlmon's Being Geniuses Together, in which he describes how, having agreed to publish her book The Making of Americans at his own expense for his company Contact Editions, Stein refused to sign a contract with him but had the gall to instruct its printer, Darantière to ship all copies of the book to America behind McAlmon's back while it was at the binder.
See McAlmon's 1924-1925 chapter of Being Geniuses Together for further details.
