Relief pitchers who are not super stars (Mariano Rivera, Bruce Sutter, Rollie Fingers, Gossage, etc.) are always inconsistent from year to year. If they were better than that, they'd be starters. So nobody should have been shocked by the Mota, Sosa & Schoenweis this year. The Yankees saw similiar drops in performance from Villone, Myers & Farnsworth - they were able to replace them in the 2nd half. That's why teams are foolish to invest a lot of money in these mediocrities.
