I am a teacher and the parent of a child that was molested by another teacher. My child did not tell me about the incident until a few years after the fact because he had been warned by the teacher of all the awful things that would happen if he did. He was aftaid to tell. However, when he did come forward, I immediately went through the channels that I was supposed to in order to report this. I also had her confession on recording, so there was no doubt that it had happened. At first I was made to feel as if it was my fault for not watching my son closer. This teacher was my best friend and I had no idea it was happening. I trusted her. They wanted it kept quiet, but I did push forward and contacted our local DA. When it finally got the proper investigation, the statute of limitations had run out by weeks. They had enough evidence to prosecute on 2 counts: sexual battery by an authority figure, and statutory rape. Because of those few weeks that it took to finally get it investigated, she got off without charges and she has her license to teach. (she did resign quietly like the school wanted her to) As a parent, (and teacher) I feel so helpless about the statute of limitations. It outrages me that she got by with this. He was 15 and reported it when he was 19. He was scared to say anything sooner. What can a person do to change the law so there is no statute of limitation on child sex crimes in ANY state. I WANT THIS LAW CHANGED!!!! This has devastated our family and who knows how it will effect him later in life???
