Tired Bullpen Wasn't Mets' Cause of Death

Submitted by metstoday, Oct 6, 2007 01:08

... it's not the total innings pitched by the bullpen, but the fact that nine relief pitchers accounted for 95% of the Mets' total relief innings. And that seven pitched 85%. Compare that to all other NL teams, and you see that the Mets' main seven relievers were the most overworked -- only the Padres come close.

On the surface, one might think that 7-9 pitchers should be plenty to handle the bullpen innings. But in fact, most teams spread out the load among 10-20 over the course of the year.

At least part of the Mets' collapse has to be blamed on the bullpen running out of gas at the end of the year -- and being over-exposed throughout the season.
