Security Council Action Against Burma Unlikely

This is just another example of U.N. impotence. China has a history of crushing democratic dissent in its own country. Voting for sanctions aganist Burma would set a dangerous precedent for this repressive regime. As one of five permanent members of the 15 member Security Council, China has veto power over any resolution.

Permanent members have a history of putting their own interests before the interest of world peace. For this reason the council will always remain ineffective.

If the west moves to impose sanctions against Burma individually, Burma would merely move more of its trade to China, so China would come out a winner anyway. The real question is whether human rights violators like China should be member of the UN Security Council. Burma is a secondary problem.

America and the west need to reassess should first reassess its relationship with China and then look to the problems in Burma.
