Facing No Pass Rush, Peyton Rallies Colts Past Broncos

Bob Griese certainly belongs in the Hall of Fame. Three straight Super Bowl appearances, the QB of the winningest team of the 1970's (yes, even a better winning percentage than the Steelers), 8 years either in the NFL Pro Bowl or AFL All Star Game, the definition of a field general leader. A classy person off the field as well. Yes, Bob was injured during much of 1972, but he got them through the tough early part of the schedule and brought them back from behind in the AFC Championship Game, when he came in at halftime and roared the Dolphins back over the Steelers. Then he went in and completed over 70% of his passes in the Super Bowl, like he'd never been away. The next year, he was healthy all year, and the Dolphins were even more of a dominant team than the year before, as nobody got close to beating them in the playoffs. Griese called all the plays that got them to those Super Bowls. Many quarterbacks in the Hall of Fame threw a fair amount of interceptions. It was a different game in the 1970's and before, with wide receivers getting bumped all over the place and stickum legal. You should know that, if you are worth your salt as a sports writer. If you look at old game films, you would see that Griese had a stronger arm than he was given credit for. He had a lot of zip to his passes. Earl Morrall was a decent quarterback, but the 1972 Dolphins knew the difference when Griese was in the huddle.
