There are so so many gun laws in NY State and NY City, so that isn't the problem to be solved. The basic problem is the inadequacies of the Court System in this State and particularly in NYC. Many gun related crimes are plea barginned so the perp does much less time, sometimes the crime he is punished for is for other than the possession of the gun, ie a drug crime yielding more sentence time.
If repeat convicted felons aren't put away for life , after yielding a gun ( not necessarily shooting it, but possession in the act of the crime) , then there is no teeth to the laws and justice system in New York. I say, once convicted of any crime and being a felon, the mere possession of a firearm of any type and regardless of whether its loaded or not loaded, should mandate life in prison without any parole. ThAT IS HOW YOU CURB GUN CRIME ACTIVIITY!!!
And Law Enforcement and the City of New York Politicians should put the drug dealer away for 20 years without any quick offering of parole ( yeah, we know the game, tough sentence that is reduced by 3/4 to only 25% of the sentenced time, because of "early parole by good behavior" , or other plea barginning because of the inability to get a timely court trial.). Drug activity and illegal guns are long associated and used by the same sick element of this society, reduce drug crime and you reduce gun crime, because its all tied together in the same lawless activity and life style.
The City Police Dept has a shady record on accurately reporting the types of crimes that are committed because they have adjusted the categories to reduce , or increase the numbers associated with the crime type that the City politicians are pushing in public press. Recall the rape and assault on women had gone down in the mid 1990s and it took about 3 added years till the truth came out- they reclassified some assaults and rapes as other types of crimes ie disputes. That way, they were able to finagle the public thru the press coverage to believe the crime busting by NYPD had reduced rapes and women could feel better and safer; it was all a willful act of portraying the data results differently. How about some independant check by a non police entitly, maybe some professional group with statistical experience to give credibility to what the NYPD and the Mayor are saying in crime data.
