Forget Reforming Burma While the Junta Rules

THIS STARTED WITH VIETNAM -- Where the cowardly allied democracies let IndoChina, Burma included, sink into a sea of bestial communism, grinding poverty, and unspeakable suffering from which it has yet to emerge. Now, as then, quick fixes are proposed. Millions died and more are dying. The key problem is that Burma has been a Socialist/Communist country since 1962. This has prevailed no matter who was in power, and if you scratch the surface of the "pro-democracy" elements they are in fact the residue of the Burmese Communist Party. Suu Kyi looks so sweet and harmless, she and her Democracy Party won in 1990, and the 'drive-by media' see an easy solution. The advocacy that the White House and State Department need to be making is for true democracy and true economic liberalization. It's not clear that the 'pretty lady' could or would deliver that.
