Senator Clinton is a down-market Richard Nixon, without the charm or the patriotism. She also lacks his imagination and intelligence. But she has a passion for government and the personal exercise of power, which he strangely lacked. I fear that President Clinton will encounter baffling problems in the domestic economy upon her inauguration, and her top-down approach to solving such problems will not avail her, just as that splendid manager, Herbert Hoover, repeatedly failed to forestall the Great Depression. She will rely upon the Department Of State to maintain a certain level of tranquility in international relations, and it will fail her just as it has done for all Presidents since World War II. The Democrat Party may not survive her elevation to titular (and effective) Party Leader. But it will know that it has a LEADER, for a change.
President Hillary Rodham Clinton will repatriate the American Armed Forces now located in the Middle East. The result of this universally popular stroke of state may recall the burning oil fields of Kuwait subsequent to Saddam' Hussein's defeat in the First Iraq War. Fanatic hatred unleashed can produce enormities, as was amply demonstrated during the 20th Century. It will be different this time, of course, and it could be awful.
