The poor coodination between podium and singer may well have been a reflection of insufficient rehearsal time together. Ms. Netrebko, who had sung Mimi only once before - three performances under Gergiev's direction, with Villazon as Rodolfo, in St. Petersburg in January - sang her final performance in a production of Sonambula in Vienna on Wednesday and was on stage as Mimi at the Met the following Tuesday. What with travel time, jet lag and a weekend intervening, the preparation must have been rushed at best. The price of filling the house with star power?
The tendency to sing sharp has been there throughout Netrebko's career. It cannot , I think, be attributed to misuse of the voice, which to my ears is as beautiful as ever, though fuller and with more colors than before.
