Spitzer's License Plan Hit On Timing, Technology

Submitted by Emma, Oct 16, 2007 15:33

I don't understand what the rush is? Spitzer plans to implement this new, somewhat radical plan over the next 7 months, a very tight timeline indeed. Yet, based on the Senate hearings, he has neither secured the funding nor purchased these fabled "state of the art" devices. This also means that there have been no test runs of the technology to gague it's accuracy.

I am in no way convinced that the benefits of steamrolling ahead with this plan, without making certain that the technology works, outweigh the significant risks.

At the Senate hearings, the DMV Commissioner stated that illegal immigrants were formerly able to obtain drivers licenses, and that this only changed during the last administration. What he failed to mention is that 911 also occurred during the last administration. We are now living in a very different New York, and a very different America.

This is not just a question of illegal day laborers from South America making a few dollars to feed their families, or fears stemming from the Middle East. Anti-American sentiment is spread far and wide these days; just look at the State Department website.

I am not convinced that foreign nations with strong anti-American sentiment will not send people over with LEGITIMATE foreign documents. The difference between undocumented and documented immigrants is a proven connection to the United States. That one has chosen to follow the laws of this nation (including the red tape that we ALL face as part of our Democracy), faithfully helped shoulder the burdens of society by paying taxes.
